Guitar Pickup Cover Configurator

A guitar-component manufacturer needed custom pickup cover plates with varying pickup counts, different footprint shapes, and configurable switch layouts, but didn't want to commission a fresh CAD model for every combination. We built a bespoke configurator that takes their inputs and produces a manufacture-ready STEP file and CAM path on its own.

The challenge

Off-the-shelf CAD needs a trained operator and a paid licence. The client wanted something their own team could drive, with no CAD knowledge and no software bill. We chose FreeCAD with a Python scripting layer precisely to keep the deployed tool licence-free. Each pickup footprint is modelled as a tool body, combined with the base cover shape through scripted Boolean operations, and the switch layout adapts automatically to the pickup count.

Services used

  • Parametric CAD system design
  • Scripted CAD automation (FreeCAD / Python)
  • CAM path generation
  • Custom UI development for non-technical end users

Deliverables

  • Deployed FreeCAD configurator with custom UI
  • Pickup footprint library (expandable)
  • STEP and CAM output pipeline
  • Documentation for client-side operation
Notable technical detail. This one sits right between CAD engineering and software development. Getting the Boolean sequence to handle every valid pickup combination, adaptive switch placement included, took both geometric precision and solid scripting. The tool pays for itself every time the client generates a new variant without us.
