Guitar Design

We have a long history of working with luthiers on guitars and their design. We offer engineering consultancy, guitar design, CAD, CAM, 3D visualisation and 3D scanning, and we support luthiers in whatever capacity they're comfortable with. That can mean anything from a first idea through to a fully functioning guitar, or something as small as a custom fretboard, an inlay design or a dimension check using 3D scanning. Whatever the scope, we tailor our work to each luthier.

Explore the guitar work

Working closely with other luthiers has also given us a deep understanding of a guitar's technical nuances. We recognise the issues that arise during a build, solve problems unique to guitar making and develop new ideas without losing the feel of the instrument.

Our work includes:
- Custom necks
- Custom fretboards
- Custom and standard stencils
- Custom pickup bobbins
- Design and technical consultancy

The challenge

Most CAD models break the moment you change a parameter. A guitar carries more than twenty interdependent dimensions: scale length, nut width, fretboard radius, truss-rod channel, neck-pocket depth, and the rest. The equations behind them have to stay valid in every combination. We built the system so the client can change the key parameters and get a manufacture-ready model back, without coming to the studio for each new variant.

Services used

  • Fully parametric CAD (Fusion 360)
  • Mesh surface modelling for complex body contours
  • CAM toolpath generation for CNC router
  • Material texturing and product renders (Blender, Cycles)
  • Technical documentation

Deliverables

  • Complete parametric CAD assembly: body, neck, fretboard, and helper components
  • CNC-ready CAM toolpaths
  • Product render set across multiple angles and configurations
  • Technical parameter documentation
Notable technical detail. Keeping the parametric equations stable across every valid input, and making them fail gracefully at the edges, took careful constraint management. The payoff is a design system the client runs and configures on their own, no CAD expertise required.
